Teaching English for Young Learners

(Personal doc.)

Teaching English language to Indonesian young learners, especially those around kindergarten age and elementary student can be quite challenging. Teaching always has been becoming my favorite thing since long time ago, this is what I'm passionate about. I've been teaching since I graduated from University.

Starting in 2011, I had the privilege of teaching English to students from 3rd to 12th grade at a prestigious institution. I truly loved every minute of it. Teaching looks simple, isn't it? You won't say that until you try it by yourself. You need extra skill when teaching English to kids. so, here are things you need to concern:
  • Limited Attention Spans

Young children have short attention spans, making it difficult to maintain their focus for extended periods.

  • Need for Playful Learning

Children at this age learn best through play and hands-on activities. Traditional teaching methods may not be effective.

  • Language Development

Their language skills are still developing, so they may not fully understand complex instructions or vocabulary.

  • Cultural Differences

If the children come from diverse backgrounds, there may be cultural differences in learning styles and communication.

Here are a few educational techniques I've found useful and some pointers from my teaching experience:

1. Play-based activities
Games, songs, and storytelling to make learning fun and engaging.

2. Visual aids
Colorful pictures, flashcards, and real-life objects to support understanding.

3. Repetition and reinforcement
Frequent repetition of new words and concepts to aid memorization.

4. Positive reinforcement
Encouragement and praise to build confidence and motivation.

Teaching English to young children requires a specialized approach that acknowledges their unique developmental needs. By prioritizing these techniques, educators can create a stimulating and supportive environment where children not only learn English but also develop a lifelong love for language.

  1. Mengajarkan bahasa Inggris ke anak memang cukup menantang. Caranya harus dengan seperti bermain. Tapi, biasanya anak lebih cepat belajar. Kemampuan berbahasa mereka bisa lebih lancar.

  7. Being an educator does have to be creative, Zi...
Especially teaching a class of children whose mood to play is higher.

If the teacher is fun, it is guaranteed that the children will not only love the teacher, but also the lesson.
