Years ago, my interest in knitting and crocheting led me to join a community of fellow knitters and crochet artists. Being a complete beginner at that time, I felt like joining a group created a supportive environment where we could learn and share our experiences together.
As many of you know, knitting and crocheting are timeless crafts. Whether you're a seasoned craft enthusiasts or just starting out, there’s something truly satisfying about creating handmade items.
I first learned to knit from a friend who taught me the "finger knitting" technique. I was so proud when I successfully finished my first scarf! While knitting and crocheting are similar, they each have their own unique charm. Unlike knitting, which uses two needles, crochet uses a single hook to interlock yarn into various patterns, resulting in a distinct texture.
"This takes me back over 40 years. I was about 5 or 6 years old when we moved to Jakarta from Medan, where I was born. It was then that I found out I had another grandma, besides my mom's mother. 😅
My grandpa had two wives 😆 But don’t worry, they all lived happily as one big family. I can assure you of that—otherwise, I wouldn’t have spent every weekend at her house. She was the one who taught me how to crochet. I found it very interesting and amusing. She made large tablecloths with BEAUTIFUL crochet patterns. I could watch her crochet for hours, sitting right next to her, mesmerized by how her hook caught the yarn, making knots and forming shapes. It was almost magical for me. 😍
She soon realized I was paying close attention and immediately started teaching me how to crochet. I got pretty good for my age. In fact, I learned quickly and was able to make complicated patterns in a short amount of time. I was only 6 years old! My grandma was the one who inspired me to crochet. I can’t thank her enough for teaching me. May she rest in peace. ❤️" ~ Winda Fitriani
